WHY STOCK NEEDS A MUSEUM ?
Well the answer is that it has an awful lot of history that needs making available to everyone. And not just local history for local people, but also for people outside of Stock (and Buttsbury) who wish to find out something about or relating to the village or its inhabitants.
A few facts.
Not everything that relates to Stock and Buttsbury is kept in the Essex Records Office. There is information that is in the care of other bodies or private hands.
It's a jolly sight lot easier if you want to find information about a place to go to the place.Local historians know an awful lot more about their village or town than someone working in a records office or county museum.

Where should it be?
Somewhere secure is the plain answer. Vandals don't value history - or anything else. But somewhere central in the village.
What should be in it?
Everything about Stock and Buttsbury, be it books, documents, plans, paintings, drawings, audio and video recordings, films, photographs or relics. Either in original form or photocopy or cd rom. Not microfilm or microfiche as viewing the latter two can in certain circumstances cause people to feel sick. As I very well know.
Copyright. Everything held should be copyright of the village with the right of people to make copies for legitimate purposes i.e. study or for the public interest.
What should be on display? Firstly old photographs and old documents and relics relating to the village. Secondly photographs of relics and other material relating to the village, which cannot be displayed there.
Has the idea been thought of before? Yes the late Donald Jarvis who was Stock's local historian for many years and had great wealth of information wanted something in the new library.Who's going to run it? Ideally a local historical society should be formed. Or failing that some committee made up of elements of various parts of the village including the parish council, village hall committee, the churches, the British Legion and interested persons.

I look forward to hearing from you.
