On 6 September 1943, Halifax II, DT793 KN *E* took off from Elvington at 1918 hours, bound for Munich (Munchen). Nothing further was heard of the aircraft or crew and it was recorded as *Missing*. The crew were Pilot Officer Reginald W.F.Munns, Pilot. Pilot Officer William W.Smith, Navigator. Sergreant Clifford W.Tomlinson, Bomb Aimer. Sergeant Richard R.Wilson, Wireless Operator. Sergeant William CSmirk, Flight Engineer. Flight Sergeant Eric Fedi RCAF, Mid Upper Gunner. Sergeant Douglas Vernon Webb, Rear Gunner In the order shown above they are recorded on the Runnymede Memorial at panels 132. 133. 167. 181. 165. 170 and 181 Eric Fedi was just 17 years of age. Webb was 29.
Douglas was the son of Stanley and Dora Webb who lived in the village.
