| Vivien Stranack, was
killed by enemy action on 23rd August 1944, she was 52 years old and was the
daughter of Mr and Mrs Bracey who originated from Durban, South Africa. It would
appear that she was injured in Harrington Road, Chelsea on the 22nd and died
the following day in the Chelsea Hospital for Consumption and Diseases of the
Chest. This is now known as the Royal Brompton Hospital. Why there is a matter
of pure conjecture as her entry in the Commonwealth War Graves database shows
that she actually lived at Crag House, Aldeburgh, Suffolk. Both her husband and
son were military men as seen on the Memorial. According to the 1901 Census
there is only one Harington Stranack and he was born in 1886 in India, as for
the son Algernon current online records do not allow such information to be
divulged. |
| Incidentally, Crag
House, Crabbe Street, Aldeburgh, Suffolk was the home of Benjamin Britten and
Peter Pears from 1947 to 1951 when they did a house swap with the artist Mary
Potter and her husband, moving to The Red House where I believe Britten lived
until his death in 1976. It was while he was at Crag House that Britten started
the Aldeburgh Festival. |
